Elizabeth is a minimart owner and mother of two in Kitengela, Kenya, who opened her shop three years ago. From the start, she developed a practical approach to managing energy costs: running D.light solar during the day and switching to the grid at night. The hybrid setup saves her roughly KSh 300 each month, money she puts directly toward her children's school fees. She represents a growing group of small business owners in Kenya's peri-urban areas who have found that solar and grid power work better together than either does alone.
I use solar during the day and grid electricity at night, which saves me around three hundred Kenyan shillings a month. This shop is now paying its own rent, the rent for where we live, and my child's school fees."
