Since switching to a solar powered sewing machine, I do not have to use my foot to run the machine anymore which saves my legs a lot of energy. The machine is more advanced and my production has increased. I can now make all types of dresses and school uniforms."

I am very proud of Solar Sister, starting with the lights and opportunities. It makes me proud. I say to women: wake up and stop sleeping! They should go out and hustle because a woman is the backbone and strength of the family."

The solar light especially helps me at night when I open the shop at 7 PM. Thanks to the solar light I can stay open until 9 PM. For the rest of the night, I use it for security."

I have a teacher that stays with the children until 9 PM, helping them with things they did not understand during the day. The solar home system has really helped, especially for children who need extra support or are a bit behind. The solar system stays on through the night for security."

Water has been the main challenge. With my petrol pump, I always had to call someone to help me. It was expensive and inconvenient. SunCulture's pump is the best thing that can happen to a farmer.”

After the solar home system everything changed; our customers increased because we stocked cold drinks. Customers used to complain the drinks were not cold enough, but since we got the solar, our drinks are very chilled. Now we buy drinks worth 900,000, sometimes 950,000."

Electricity is not always available, and my neighbors used a torch or kerosene lamps. The batteries for the torches are costly to operate all the time. And that system is very dangerous. Solar is very useful, especially in the home. Through me, my neighbors no longer have to buy fuel; they all use solar lamps. In fact, with our home system, we only use solar lighting. There is not a night I sleep without solar light. Where is there money for me to be buying kerosene, petrol, and diesel?"

Around here, in Migori, Kenya, grid electricity isn’t reliable, so people like solar lights. They’re also cheaper than paying for electricity, which makes them popular. The training I got from Solar Sister, especially on ‘connected selling’ and finding new customers, has been the most helpful. Now, I have a dream to study cosmetology and one day open my own salon, besides growing my soap and solar light business.”

Before adopting solar, we operated a petrol generator. It was quite costly. I used to buy about 100 litres of petrol almost every week. Now education outcomes have definitely improved: students are accessing external resources beyond the classroom, because their computers and phones are charged."

With funding gratefully acknowledged from ESMAP. ESMAP (Energy Sector Management Assistance Program) is the World Bank Group partnership helping low- and middle-income countries deploy sustainable energy solutions to boost economic growth and reduce poverty. ESMAP is managed and staffed by the World Bank Group but funded separately by more than 20 donor governments and philanthropies. We support countries to secure universal energy access by 2030, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 7, while transitioning from fossil fuel energy sources to low-carbon energy solutions such as solar and wind power. ESMAP also helps countries increase their energy sectors’ climate resilience. We turn evidence into action by conducting research and aggregating data to make policy recommendations and advising World Bank Group energy projects. We also make donor contributions available as grants for planning and feasibility studies or help mobilize financing from third parties, including the private sector.
