GOGLA’s sales and impact data is the bedrock of information on the off-grid solar and energy efficient appliances sector. It is used to track the stand-alone off-grid solar industry’s contribution to energy access by the Sustainable Development Goal 7 custodians and feeds into key research and reports on energy access.
GOGLA, the World Bank’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP), and the Efficiency for Access Coalition publish the yearly Global Off-Grid Solar Market Report, a market intelligence series on sales and impact of off-grid solar lighting products and appliances, sold by GOGLA affiliates.
The latest sales and impact data is out! Read on to find out key take-aways from the 2024 annual data full report. Despite global headwinds, the off-grid solar industry showed resilience in 2024. GOGLA affiliates are currently reaching more than 137 million people with improved energy access, including 3,6 million people using their solar energy kit to support enterprise.
Beyond access to electricity, the off-grid solar industry is also providing close to 19 million fan users with space cooling and close to 8 million TV users with access to information and entertainment.
GOGLA affiliates also sell products unlocking productive activity such as solar water pumps, fridges, cold rooms or mills. Close to 3 million people are estimated to be benefiting from such services through off-grid solar solutions.
A total of 9.3 million solar energy kits were sold in 2024, which represents a 4% increase from 2023. However, sales remained 2% lower than the peak recorded in 2022.
PAYGo sales grew by 1% while cash sales grew by 5% compared to 2023.
Global lantern sales (0-3Wp) grew 3% in 2024, reaching 5.64 million units and multi-light system (MLS) sales (3-10Wp) increased 11% year-on-year to just over 1.94 million units. Solar home system (SHS) sales dropped 1% annually, reaching 1.7 million units overall – with 11-50Wp system sales growing while 50+Wp system sales decreased.
For the first time, the sales data collection included sales of solar generators. For the data collection, solar generators were defined by their inclusion of an inverter. In 2024, 8 manufacturers reported sales of solar generators. In total, 48,000 units were sold in 2024.
Challenges in the solar energy kit sales are also mirrored in the sales of household appliances, notably TV sales in Sub-Saharan Africa:
Productive appliance sales decrease when controlling for increase in the number of reporting companies
