Market Assessment: Ethiopia

The Ethiopia market assessment report assesses the current state of the productive use of renewable energy (PURE) market in Ethiopia to inform stakeholders of the market challenges and opportunities, alongside the actions needed to support PURE sector growth.

The report aims to inform policymakers, practitioners, and investors on the status and potential of solar energy for productive uses in Ethiopia. The research was conducted between March and April 2023. It included interviews with 13 Ethiopian PURE companies and seven key stakeholders working in the PURE ecosystem, and a review of relevant industry-focused documents.

This market assessment was authored by Precise Consult in conjunction with GOGLA, the Ethiopian Solar Development Association (ESEDA) and the National PUE Taskfoce led by the Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE). The assessment was made possible through the financial support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union (EU), through the international initiative Water and Energy for Food (WE4F).

Roadmap: Ethiopia

The Ethiopia Roadmap for Scaling Up Productive Use of Renewable Energy in Ethiopia aims to create an enabling environment for the scaleup of a sustainable PURE market in Ethiopia, bringing the country one step closer to unlocking the economic and livelihood opportunities enabled by universal energy access and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It provides an overview of the current PURE market situation, the policies in place, the barriers to scaling up PURE, and the priority actions needed to address them.

The National Roadmap for Scaling Up Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) in Ethiopia was developed by the Ethiopian Solar Development Association (ESEDA) and the National PURE Taskforce chaired by the Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE), with the financial support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union (EU), through the international initiative Water and Energy for Food (WE4F). Precise Consult, a consulting firm specializing in developing sustainable energy markets in Ethiopia, provided technical assistance to prepare the roadmap, supported by GOGLA, the global association for the off-grid solar energy industry.

Market Assessment: Uganda

The Uganda market assessment report on the Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) in Uganda provides an in-depth analysis of the potential, challenges, and opportunities of solar energy for productive use in Uganda.

The report aims to inform policymakers, practitioners, and investors on the status and potential of solar energy for productive uses in Uganda. It does this by sharing an analysis of PURE products and companies in the market as well as the demand, supply, and anticipated trends in productive use of solar energy. The report also covers an overview of PURE customer profiles, and a review of current PURE business models along with policies, programmes, and plans.

This market assessment was authored by the Centre for Research in Energy and Energy Conservation (CREEC) in conjunction with GOGLA and the Ugandan Solar Energy Association (USEA) with the financial support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union (EU), through the international initiative Water and Energy for Food (WE4F)

Roadmap: Uganda

The Uganda roadmap provides a situational analysis and the needed strategic interventions to leverage the productive use of solar energy (PUSE) in Uganda. It further provides an analysis of the policy and legal framework, an overview of the PUSE applications in the country, and provides a list of challenges, barriers, and opportunities. It goes further to provide for financing and implementation actions, a monitoring and evaluation framework and to lay the channels for collaboration between the Government of Uganda, Development Partners, and all sector players to achieve a common vision for the country.

This National Roadmap for Productive Use of Solar Energy (NR-PUSE) has been prepared by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) in partnership with the Uganda Solar Energy Association (USEA), with support from GOGLA and the financial support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union (EU), through the international initiative Water and Energy for Food (WE4F).
